Fabmasters built burners for fossil fuel plants, elevating platforms for the unloading of semi trailer cargo, and various other projects. I was hired as welder but a good deal of my time was spent cutting, fitting, rigging, grinding, as well as welding (MIG, and Stick). Fab Masters was having a hard time generating the necessary amount of contracts to stay in business.

Lakota Homes was a new plant/project for Franklin homes of Russellville, AL. The owner (Jerry James) decided to open Lakota Homes and wanted to use the most advanced ideas and equipment possible. However, most ideas and systems were constructed by starting at the most basic point then brain storming, identifying needs, and creating a system or process that would be most efficient and productive for the operator, plant, and or section.
The building was not designed to take such wieght so that is when they contracted me. My first objective was to reinforce the structural integrity of the plant. Once completed I moved on to building/fabricating an air lifted assembly line that took the modular home from start to finish through the air on tracks by lifting agents, electric trolley systems, and other traveling systems throughout the plant. I also created the equipment and processes necessary in the individual sections such as wall tables with pneumatic and electrical engines, floor tables with pneumatic and electrical engines, catwalks, stairs, docking stations, water and gas lines (piping), insulation systems, rolling systems, machinery, tools, shelving, safety barriers, frame/weld shop, , lighting, and much more. Communicated with owner, Jerry James, regarding project and process through meetings at Franklin Homes, Lakota Homes, and by phone. I was extremely proud of the responsibility and trust shown to me (after earning it) by Jerry James and everyone involved with the Lakota effort.

As member of The Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, and Forgers I was trained with many skills that apply to many construction applications but specialized in boiler technology, construction, and repair. Built, altered, and repaired fossil (coal and natural gas) and nuclear power plants. In 1994 I was accepted into the Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Program. Finished 7th out of 636. Attended school in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and at the Boilermakers National Apprenticeship College in Kansas City, KS (accredited). Worked 7000 hours as apprentice. After completing the apprenticeship I became a craftsman/journeyman and spent many years in the field.

Graphix Laser Systems
Computerized In-House Art Departments for the Imprinted Sportswear Industry
Florence, AL.
August 1990 – May 1994
At Graphix Laser Systems we consulted with business owners regarding computerized in-house art departments (Macintosh and PC computer graphic systems). We worked with the imprinted sportswear industry, which included, screen printers, offset printers, embroidery digitizers, freelance artists, and signage industries. I hired as a consultant but was promoted to consulting manager soon after my first year. My clients included Nike, Jansport, Chalkline Sports, and many other well known companies as well as regular “mom and pop” shops.
My duties included evaluating the customers needs, proposing the correct system and equipment needed, then incorporating the system into the business. I did this with as little confusion, trouble, and “down time” as possible through training of the artist(s) as well as the owners. I personally overseen all customer and technical support 24/7.
I hired, fired, trained and managed up to 15 consultants at a time. I started with a territory of 3 states and ended with 15 states. I traveled, set up, displayed, and consulted at industry trade shows all over the United States. I worked closely with, and reported to, the owner and national coordinator through meetings, productivity reports, personnel evaluations, and financial reports weekly, monthly, and quarterly.

Dockside Cafe

Sept. 1987 – April 1990
I opened a small restaurant in the business district of St. Joseph, Michigan near the beach. I successfully ran it for 3 years and then sold the business to a attorney from Chicago for a significant profit.
My duties included managing, advertising and marketing the business. Ordering, organizing, and planning food preparation. Giving customer service, meeting with food and restaurant reps, and handling the restaurants finances. I did everything from cook, wash dishes, to clean bathrooms. Being young when opening the restaurant has given me an unusual perspective in my life in understanding how important it is to have employee’s who are self motivated, trust worthy, and understand that we are all in this to succeed.
